Youth Class Descriptions

The Shoebox Youth program is dedicated to providing performers with high quality pre-professional training in a supportive, loving, and non-competitive environment. We are committed to fostering creativity and joy in the performing arts. Participants of the program often generate all of their own performance material, or create performance material in collaboration with our dedicated and skilled instructors, rather than being taught someone else's work.

Our program provides youth with a structured creative outlet, giving them the opportunity to build performances around themes and issues that are important to them, while providing them with the best possible training in the technique necessary to support their work.

All of our Instructors are professionals working in the arts - Dancers, Actors, Directors, Lighting Designers, Hair and Makeup Artists, Costume Stylists, and more - giving teens the opportunity to work directly with professional artists in their respective fields.

We believe that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and the cost of our youth program reflects that philosophy. We are happy to work with you on payment plans, financial aid, work study, or any other options we can provide to make sure that our programs are available to all. To speak with us about payment options, call us at 415.861.5976, or email shoebox studio at gmail dot com, and we'll get back to you.

Beginning/Intermediate Hip Hop
with Cera
Age 13-19
A mixed level class fusing Hip Hop, Funk, and Jazz. This pulse-racing class is all about building your own dance style using two of dance's favorite styles, Jazz and Hip Hop. Students will learn strong technique masked in the fun and funk of hip-hop and jazz. After a strong warm up and conditioning, the class will do across the floor work followed by a high-energy yet accessible combination that will give you a workout and have you workin' it.

Lyrical Jazz
with Christina
Age 13-19
Combining the strength and grace of ballet with the style and fun of jazz, lyrical incorporates a wide variety of movements that utilize every muscle of the body. The music and style make lyrical a very expressive and open dance form, allowing each student to personalize their movements. Lyrical Jazz begins with a warm up and conditioning, followed by across the floor exercises. Each week we will work on a combination center floor building on the technique and styles learned throughout class and danced to a variety of songs that will inspire beginning and experienced students alike.
